Hola! My name is Sonia Duarte, I grew up in Mexico and moved to sunny Huntington Beach a little after my seventh birthday. Though English is my second language I fell in love with literature at a very young age. The novel, "The House of Mango Street," propelled me into university, inspiring to be the first college graduate in my family. After graduating from CSUF with a major in English, I got to meet Sandra Cisneros and was able to share with her how much her book meant to me.
Soon after, I entered the credential and master's program at National University and completed my Secondary Teaching Credential. I decided to wait on completing my Master's until after I was employed with a school district; however, health reasons postponed my goal. After ten years, I am returning to university to complete my last class and hoping to complete it during this national quarantine. I am currently employed at Opportunities for Learning Charter Schools and undergoing the induction program. I work with at risk students who are failing out of high school and come to my school to catch-up on credits or for a different type of instruction. I love what I do and constantly amazed by the life that I am living - having started in s small insignificant pueblo in Mexico, but as the saying goes, "you can take a girl out of Mexico, but not the Mexican from the girl. |
